Six Championship sides submitted an application to a seven-strong panel, chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine, with Leigh recommended to replace Toronto Wolfpack next year.

Rovers finished as runners-up to Toronto in the 2019 Championship Grand Final and had hoped to become a Super League side next season with the Canadian outfit's bid to rejoin the competition rejected last month.

Explaining the process behind the decision to recommend Leigh for promotion, Lord Caine said: "Last month the RFL and Super League Europe invited me to become the independent chair of a panel to decide who should become the 12th club in Super League.

"The panel met four times with over eight hours of intense discussions. Each of the six applications were judged strictly and fairly and all applications were of high quality.

"It made picking the winner all the more challenging. All of us hope the 2021 season will take place on time and in front of paying spectators so the other five clubs can challenge for promotion on the pitch."
