Junior Witter has hailed the start made by Wakefield boxer Dominic to his professional career, insisting he has come through a tougher run than most.

The Lupset-born fighter is 5-0 since making his debut in November 2018 but a hand injury and the coronavirus pandemic has meant he has not fought since September.

Hunt’s trainer Witter has been training fighters since 2015, when he was still boxing himself, and is a former WBC and WBF super lightweight champion.

It has been a frustrating 10 months for Hunt who has been able to return to training following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Witter has been sure to pick bouts that will test Hunt in the early stages of his career.

His third fight was against journeyman Fonz Alexander, who had lost 93 of 99 fights but was competing in his 100th bout.

Hunt won that contest via a points decision and Witter explained why it was a much better result than it looked on paper,

“Dom has had a slow start to his career because of everything that has happened over the last 12 months,” said Witter of the Wakefield fighter.

“He has boxed good opponents and people who have come out and had a go.

“He had to box a journeyman on his 100th fight, for anyone you are going to go out and you are going to try and win.

“His opponent has got all that experience so he knows how to survive, he can throw punches and he knows how to not get hit.

“He came out and put it on Dom but Dom dealt with it in such a way that he completely nullified him.

“On paper, that doesn’t seem as good a result as it realistically was but it was a special night for his opponent.

“You want to win your 100th fight as journeyman. You might not be as bothered about winning in your 94th, 95th fights but when it is your 100th, it means something.

“Dom has not had the easiest of runs and he has performed and won all his fights.

“The end of last year, he was supposed to box in November but that got put off because he got a viral infection. He trained and was hoping to box on March 20 but that got cancelled with lockdown coming in. It has been a frustrating year.”

Witter, who won 43 of his 53 pro bouts, has hailed the improvement in Hunt since he started training with the former world champion.

Hunt is eligible to fight for the Irish title on the heritage rule and Witter hopes that is a belt the Wakefield fighter will be able to compete for in the coming months.

“I have seen massive improvements from where he was. He is getting what I am teaching him,” he added.

“I am very proud of how much he has taken in this last year, he is bigger and stronger and he is going to get better.

“I want to get him a title fight, the Irish title is quite interesting for him and that is one we are looking at.”
