Pirates hope to have wind in their sails in search for Champions Cup treasure

The Pirates travel to Northampton Sailing Club in Pitsford, Northamptonshire, where they will represent the RYA North Zone in the national finals this weekend.

Pugneys cruised to victory in their regional zone over the summer and it will be the second year running they’ve made the Champions Cup finals.

They went sail-to-sail with the best young windsurfers in the country last October and finished third overall - a position they will be keen to improve on a year on.

The event will see around 90 talented youngsters battle it out on the water over two days in a bid to win the prestigious title of Team15 National Champions 2013.

The competitors, all aged under 16, will compete in four different windsurfing classes, each with different sail sizes proportionate to their age and ability (3.5m, 4.5m, 5.8m, Techno 6.8).

The youngsters will race against the very best of their peers from across the country, trying to post the best individual results and assisting their team to contest for the overall trophy.

Pirates will be up against six of the best young teams from around the country, who all qualified from their regoional zones.

Polkerris Pirates (Cornwall), Pitsford Pirates (Northamptonshire), West Kirby Warriors (Wirral), the Loch Insh Monsters (Scotland), Axbridge Animals (Southern Zone) and Spray Sprites (South East Zone) will stand in the way of Pugneys and the national title.

But the Wakefield team will go into the event in confident mood and with last year’s experience in their favour.

A group of young Pugneys members travelled to Warwickshire to compete in the RYA West Zone Championships at Draycote Water Sailing Club.

The event, one of a number across the country, traditionally marks the end of the junior racing season, and Pugneys showcased their talents, especially brothers Josh and Matt Carey, who topped their respective classes.

The siblings have travelled across the country competing together since they were seven and their experience showed in Warwickshire.

Josh finished first in the Bic Techno 6.8 class while Matt was first boy in the Bic Techno 7.8 class.

Pugneys team mate Thomas Sambrook finished third in the 6.8m class, while Joe Thompson secured second spot in the 7.8m class.
