After lying third after the first two rounds, the City of Leeds pair slipped down the leaderboard and finished sixth with a score of 292.83.

Chinese duo Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao dominated to take the gold medals ahead of second-placed Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape, from Italy, and bronze medallists Maddison Keeney and Annabelle Smith, from Australia.

Gallantree said: “We’re a little bit disappointed to be honest. It didn’t quite come together for us and it’s frustrating to see we weren’t too far off the medals.

“It would have been achievable for us had we just performed a little bit better. But unfortunately, that’s sport and it just wasn’t our day.”
