Agar: Grix’s try on the seventh tackle a bitter pill to swallow for Wildcats

RICHARD Agar left Warrington pleased with the performance of his battling Wildcats but bemoaning Simon Grix’s decisive try that came on the seventh tackle of a set.

Wakefield lost out by just two points in an entertaining Super League contest at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, 32-30, and Agar could take plenty of positives back to West Yorkshire, despite seeing his side fall to their fourth defeat on the spin.

“The biggest disappointment for me is a try on the seventh tackle from Simon Grix,” he said.

“We’ve had two already this season fairly and squarely ruled out for forward passes and then we get a try on the seventh tackle. It makes it a little bit of a bitter pill to swallow.”

He continued: “It probably would have been hard for Smithy to argue if we had got a draw out of it. In the second half we were definitely under the cosh but for the first half we started the game in really good fashion.

“In the second half we had to chew up our interchange a fair amount of the time. We lost Danny Kirmond and I thought Warrington really got the ascendency through the middle of the field, particularly on Michael Monaghan’s reintroduction to the game, they had a really big weight of possession.

“The pleasing thing for me is our guys dragged themselves up the ropes. It was a game of inches as we say a lot in sport.

“Our goalkickers have been bagged from pillar to post but he [Isaac John] kicked magnificently today. The goal kick has dropped an inch short and we did have some chances to win the game after that as well.”

Agar has been firm in his belief over recent weeks that victory for Wakefield, a first since the opening-day win at Widnes Vikings, isn’t too far away - a belief that was justified against Tony Smith’s men.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s visit of Catalan Dragons and Agar will be hoping impressive performances can be turned into points against the French club.

“I’m not sure we could have got much closer than that,” he commented.

“A lot of people will judge teams wrongly, some so-called expert people, on their league position and the fact we haven’t won four or five games but anybody that has seen our performances will have seen that the spirit, commitment and character is all there.

“There’s some good football within there as well and I’m sure our wins will come if we continue to keep improving in training like we are doing and keep putting in the performances of this level.

“Warrington are a very good side and we’ve come up with a great performance that give us a shout of winning the game.”
