Chris Chester after more of the same from Wakefield Trinity against St Helens

CHRIS CHESTER wants more of the same on the performance front from his Wakefield Trinity players when they face St Helens for the second game running tonight.

Trinity suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the league leaders at Headingley last week but their performance left Chester with plenty to be encouraged about.

Wakefield are the only side yet to win since the campaign resumed in August and sit bottom of the table with two wins from 13 games.

Chester is frustrated by the lack of consistency from his side but hopes to see a repeat of last week’s fight and determination this evening.

“I wasn’t frustrated with the result, I am more frustrated we can’t do that week-in and week-out,” said Chester.

“That has been the biggest issue for us for a number of years and something we are trying to address, but last week I thought we attacked pretty good and toughed it out when we needed to.

“With a little bit of luck here and there it could have been a different story.

“It is probably the best performance we have had since lockdown.”

Wakefield will be welcoming a handful of players back in the coming weeks, meaning those already in the side will need to give Chester a good reason to keep them in it.

Trinity were almost faultless last week, making just two errors, and a repeat display will give them a chance of toppling high-flying Saints.

“There’s some areas of our game we need to fix up,” he admitted.

“The right-edge are prepared, they have leaked a few tries over the last few weeks and we have tried to tinker with a few things in training.

“Fingers crossed we can defend a bit tougher on that right side, but looking at the squad, it is one that’s more than capable of getting a result.

“There’s some guys coming back over the next three to four days as well - Jacob Miller, Tinirau Arona, Tony Gigot and Jay Pitts - so there’s going to be some competition for places and everybody has got a lot to play for this week.”

With no new Covid-19 cases reported at Belle Vue this week, Chester has named a 20-man squad for the contest at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium including last week’s 17, plus Ben Jones-Bishop, Chris Green and Romain Navarrete.
