The veteran scrum-half returned to the field in Friday’s 17-14 Challenge Cup victory over Bradford Bulls.

It was his first appearance since injuring a knee and foot in Trinity’s opening game of the season at Hull KR.

Brough struggled at times with his kicking and there was some obvious rustiness having been out of action for six weeks.

However, he came up with a wonderful pass for Joe Westerman’s try and there were flashes of his quality as a fortunate Wakefield side left it late to come from behind to defeat the Championship part-timers.

“It is really good to be back,” said the 37-year-old, with Trinity initially feeling the Steve Prescott Man of Steel had suffered a season-ending ACL injury at Rovers.

“It (knee) could have been worse. The knee feels good. I actually did my foot and my knee in the same tackle and my foot is giving me more jip than my knee.

“I am getting over that now and I felt alright in patches.

“I was tugging out there a bit. I didn’t feel the best but obviously I got through the game.”

Wakefield are in tonight’s sixth round draw but came desperately close to suffering a shock defeat.

Brough knows Bradford coach John Kear well having played under him when Hull FC stunned Leeds Rhinos in the 2005 Challenge Cup final.

“He has that influence of getting players to turn up for the occasion,” said the former Scotland captain.

“Tonight they did and we were lucky to scrape through if I am being perfectly honest.

“Most of the credit goes to Bradford.

“I thought our bench changed the game when they came on running straight and direct.”

That was certainly true with prop Dave Fifita impressing as he also returned from his own injury for a first game since August.

Wakefield, who have won two from five of their opening Super League games, are scheduled to face Toronto at York’s Bootham Crescent on Sunday.

The Wolfpack have still yet to win a league game since being promoted but got their first victory of the campaign when they defeated Brough’s former club Huddersfield Giants in an impressive 18-0 Cup success on Wednesday.

“We will have to up our game 100 times more than we did against Bradford to beat Toronto,” he said.

“They have hit a bit of form and once those passes start clicking they will put a big score on someone. Hopefully, it is not us but we have to be a lot better than we have been here.”

However, it seems certain professional rugby league will shut down as from today due to the coronavirus .

Super League clubs are meeting in Huddersfield to start navigating a way through likely postponements.
