Morrison honoured to be Wakefield Wildcats captain

GLENN Morrison has described his new role as Wakefield Wildcats captain as a “great honour”.

Vice-captaincy at previous club Bradford Bulls is as close as the 34 year-old has got to leading a team in the past but after the second rower was officially named as the new skipper at the Wildcats’ pre-season launch event tonight, Thursday, he hopes that he can lead his team to greater success next season.

He said: “It is a great honour at any club but Wakefield has such a great tradition that it is even more special.”

Morrison was in excellent form during his debut season at Wakefield last year but following the Wildcats’ disappointing end to their campaign, he wants to spearhead an improved team display in Super League XVI.

He said: “I was pretty happy with how I played last year but results at the end of the season were just not good enough.

“Everyone was embarrassed about the way we played and we want to put that right. I am looking for improvement from both myself and the team.”

Morrison believes that his new responsibility will not detract from his performances on the field, saying: “My game won’t change that much. I always try to be a leader on the pitch and I like to lead from the front.”

Wildcats head coach John Kear said: “After much consideration the coaching staff decided to offer Glenn the captaincy as reward for a magnificent on-field season in 2010 but also because of the impact he has on the club off the field.”

“It is obviously a vital appointment not only because of the role a captain plays in the group dynamics of the team but also because it is the final year of this great club’s tenure at Belle Vue and the person appointed as captain had to be deemed to be suitable in such circumstances, and Glenn obviously is.”
