Owen’s late try earns Wildcats thrilling derby win

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats snatched their first win over derby rivals Leeds Rhinos for two years with winger Richard Owen’s last gasp try in last night’s Super League clash at Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The Rhinos led 14-12 until Richard Mathers sent Owen sliding in at the corner to earn the Wildcats a 16-14 victory and maintain their unbeaten record under new head coach James Webster.

Aussie half-back Tim Smith was again a key man for the resurgent Wildcats, helping to set up all their three tries.

Wakefield are now just four points behind eighth placed Widnes Vikings who they host in a televised match next Thursday.

Smith’s kick set up Danny Washbrook’s 16th minute touchdown to put Wakefield ahead but Leeds replied through Kallum Watkins and went into the break 8-6 ahead thanks to a long-range effort from Ben Jones-Bishop.

Smith switched the direction of the play for his half-back partner Paul Sykes to create the opening for Mathers to score after 53 minutes to edge the Wildcats back in front but Ryan Hall’s try from Danny McGuire’s high kick put Leeds in control heading into the final 10 minutes.

McGuire them had an effort ruled out before Owen got the winner to give Wakefield revenge for two defeats against Leeds this season.
