A document released on Monday revealed that “cultural and sporting events” could take place again at the beginning of June at the earliest.

Any return for professional sport will take place behind closed doors, however, with many sporting bodies unsure when supporters will be allowed back into stadiums.

The Rugby Football League have been working with The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport as well as UK Sport to discuss when Super League and Championship players can return to training and when matches behind closed doors can get underway.

“The RFL has been working in conjunction with DCMS, UK Sport and other sports to agree appropriate protocols relating to the return to training and in due course behind closed doors matches,” a RFL statement read on Monday.

“Guidance on the return to training for elite sportsmen and women is being finalised at a national level and will then be shared across the sport.

"Work on behind closed doors sport will continue, and each sport will then have to consider how the general national protocols are applied to its sport and effectively rolled out.”

No date for the return of rugby league has been finalised as the statement added: “Accordingly, it is not yet appropriate to specify a date when Rugby League matches will recommence.”
