Wakefield Trinity aiming to redraw all-too familiar pattern

The 28-26 loss to Leeds Rhinos two days ago was Trinity’s fifth successive defeat in Betfred Super League, after they won their opening four matches.

“I think in every game, bar one, we’ve been leading at half-time,” Huby said. “We are not helping ourselves with silly errors – I did a couple in the first half – and silly penalties, and it kills you towards the back end of the game.

“It’s credit to the effort of the boys that we are still hanging in there. With a couple of minutes to go we scored a late try and we could possibly even have snatched it on the bell, but we haven’t got that luck at the minute.

“I think we’ve just got to keep working hard like we are doing and grinding it out and it’ll turn and get back to like it was at the start of the year.”

Huby is confident Trinity, who are now seventh in the table, will get back on track.

“It’s not like we’re getting beaten by 40 or 50 points,” he said. “We just need that bit of luck and confidence. Sunday was the first dry game for a while and we moved the ball a bit better.

“When we get our timing on that, things are going to come good. We are still pretty positive, we know we are there or thereabouts.”

Trinity’s run of defeats began with a 30-18 loss at Wigan Warriors. They were beaten 34-24 at Warrington Wolves, 11-6 by Castleford Tigers and 27-26 away to Hull before the two-point setback last weekend.

And Huby pointed out: “We’ve lost by a total of 30 points. It’s six points per game.

“We are not far off, just one silly error or one silly penalty away.

“It is punishing us at the minute, but we’ve just got to stick together and keep the effort up and keep working hard for each other, which, for 95 per cent of the game, we are doing. We just need that little bit of ‘smarts’.”

Games aren’t getting any easier for Trinity who play host to leaders St Helens on Sunday.

“We are doing it tough and Saints are on fire at the minute,” Huby conceded.

“Hopefully, we might get a few bodies back in the next week or so and we’ve just got to take each game as it comes and focus on what we need to do better, one-on-one D [defence] and that sort of thing.

“We know we’re not far away and the scorelines are showing that as well.

“A couple of smart things and it’s totally different.”
