Wakefield Trinity Wildcats: Reaching final would be dream for Kirmond

Reaching the Challenge Cup final would cap a perfect season for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats captain Danny Kirmond.

The second-rower has made 13 appearances for Trinity this season, and has been a regular in Chris Chester’s plans, despite some minor injury setbacks.

However, despite Trinity being just one round away from a trip to Wembley, he acknowledged that their semi-final clash with Warrington Wolves will be their biggest test of the season.

But having already edged out the Lancashire outfit in a closely fought 36-28 encounter in May, Kirmond feels they can repeat the trick this weekend.

He said: “They are a great team, there is no getting away from that fact. We’ve both beaten each other once this season and it comes down to who performs on the day.

“Coming into it, we’ll all be fired up and I think some of the lads will be given a psychological edge by the fact we managed to beat them earlier on this season.

“We saw it with Hull Kingston Rovers last season, they made it to the final under Chris Chester and I’m hopeful that this year, it’ll be us with a shot at the trophy.

The opportunity to lead a side out at Wembley is something that Kirmond has always wanted to do and hopes that he will eventually get his chance this year.

The 30-year-old hopes he will not have to wait too much longer before he is bestowed with that honour.

“When you grow up playing rugby league, it’s always your dream to lead your team out for the Challenge Cup final and to win some silverware.

“I’d be very proud to lead the lads out if that opportunity falls my way because that chance has always been my ambition and it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.

“To see the boys alongside me would make it even sweeter but to get to where we are already, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have managed to achieve.”
