Wakefield Wildcats: Ex-boss Webster backing Wildcats to regain Super League desire

Webster left the club on Tuesday, after less than a year in charge, with Wakefield seven points adrift at the foot of the table and on a run of 11 league defeats.

“I didn’t get thrown out, but Michael Carter (the Wakefield Wildcats’ chairman) agreed with what I said,” Webster revealed.

“I still believe they can do it, they can stay up. Obviously it will be through the hard route in the middle-eights, but they have got enough talent.

“They have got to find some desire to defend for longer periods.

“And I’m giving them an opportunity to hopefully find someone who can find that desire.

“They have got enough time, but in six weeks’ time it would probably be too late.”

Webster said he knew it was time to leave when he could no longer defend his players after games. He added: “I want to give this club the best chance to stay up, it has been good to me.

“As a coach your responsibility is to defend your players to the death, but it got to the stage when I could not publicly defend them any more, so it is time to give someone else a chance to take them forward.”

Webster, who was appointed in June, is now taking time out from the game. “I have no plans,” he said.
