Wildcats are looking a lot healthier

After beating London Broncos in their first game under new head coach James Webster, the Wildcats pulled off a stunning 36-28 victory over champions Wigan Warriors last weekend.

Webster wants his side to keep up the good work in Sunday’s clash against Hull when the Wildcats will be seeking a Super League double following last month’s 23-16 success at the KC Stadium.

Last Sunday’s win lifted Wakefield to 11th place in the table and they are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Victory this weekend would put them level on points with Hull.

“We have got some space now and we are looking a lot healthier,” said Webster.

“The players and coaching staff want to do their best. We want to finish in the position we deserve.

“The thing for us is we want to fulfil our potential this year - whatever that may be.

“We don’t want to short change ourselves. Bradford are not really a team we’ve thought about, we just want to keep improving and jump up the ladder as much as possible.”

Webster was the delighted with the effort from his players as they knocked Wigan off top spot.

“We tried really hard. The game changed many times and we were 18-6 down at one stage, so to come back from that and win, it was a really good result for us,” he added.

“We will get better with the ball, but in terms of effort and commitment, it was our best of the year.

“It was an exciting game. I thought the boys played really tough and gutsed it out.

“Wigan came at us for the full 80 minutes. I thought it was a decent game of rugby if you’re a neutral, and you will have enjoyed it.

“But as a Wigan or a Wakefield supporter there was a couple of moments where it was heart-in-your-mouth sort of stuff.

“We’ve spoken about standing up in the face of adversity and it was something we mentally addressed the first day we got together.

“I thought the boys were gutsy last Sunday and we were able to go set for set against a particularly good team.”

Wakefield were without centre Lucas Walshaw against Wigan because of a groin problem suffered in their final training run and Matt Ryan played despite being hurt during the warm-up but Webster said there were no other major new fitness worries.

With centre Ben Crooks injured, former New Zealand international Setaimata Sa is set to make his first start for Hull FC this Sunday.

Wakefield half-back Jarrod Sammut has joined Championship neighbours Featherstone in a dual registration deal. Sammut is the second Australian half-back to make the move from the Wildcats to Featherstone who took Harry Siejka on loan earlier this month.
