WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats head coach John Kear has warned his players that the friendly clash at Bradford Bulls on Sunday is their “last chance to earn their shirt.”
Wildcats travel to Odsal with a strong squad and Kear admits that there is still time for the players to stake their claim ahead of the new Super League XVI season.
He said: “All the senior full-time players will get a run out at Bradford. I will tell them before the game that it’s their last chance to earn their shirt.
“You might see some interesting combinations at the weekend. Players like Josh Veivers and Kieran Hyde have really stepped up and shown that they want to start.
“It makes it tough to pick your best 17. Different people are offering different things in different positions and it is making it fascinating.”
He said: “We have a thin squad and they may find themselves playing out of what some people would say is their number one position but that’s the reality this season and we will just have to roll up our sleeves and do it.
“The players have demonstrated that they are happy to do that as long as they have a shirt. They just want to play and that’s really refreshing to see.”
Jeremy Smith, who is still awaiting his work visa, does not play at Bradford, but hopes to receive the visa before the start of the season.
Matt Blaymire has shaken off a hamstring injury and has been named in the squad for Sunday’s game.
Wildcats squad: Blaymire, Penny, Murphy, Millard, George, Jeffries, Obst, Korkidas, Rinaldi, King, Henderson, Ferguson, Morrison, Lee, Johnson, Mariano, Howarth, Veivers, Wildie, Hyde, Spiers.
Bulls squad: Platt, Sykes, Walker, Ah Van, Kearney, Herbert, Scruton, L’Estrange, Lynch, Elima, Whitehead, Langley, Diskin, Hargreaves, Kopczak, Sibbit, Ainscough, Raynor, Royston, Briggs.
