WAKEFIELD Wildcats have boosted their forward pack with the signing of Newcastle Knights back rower Steve Southern.

The 29-year-old has penned a three-year contract at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium starting from next season, subject to UK Border approval.

Southern has a wealth of NRL experience to his name, most notably with North Queensland Cowboys, where he spent six successful years and played in the Grand Final in 2005.

The announcement follows a host of new signings at Belle Vue, which come hot-on-the-heels of Wakefield receiving a new three-year Super League license.

Southern said: “I’m really excited about my future at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, with a new owner, new Super League licence and new coach it really is the start of something new and I’m stoked to be a part of that.”

“I have a lot of family in England and I’ve always wanted to get over here and play Super League. I’m really happy that I’m finally doing that for Wakefield and I can’t wait to get out on the field and put in my all as a Wildcat.”

Wildcats chief executive James Elston added: “Steve is a great addition to our squad for the next three years, his NRL experience will provide a great boost to many of our younger players and his ruthless playing style will be great for our supporters to see.”

“I have heard many great things about Steve’s work ethic and he has been a popular member with both fans and players at every team he has been at, I’m sure he will be a perfect fit at The Wildcats. I look forward to his arrival and seeing him in action for Wakefield.”

Southern, from New South Wales, was a fans’ favourite during his time with the Cowboys before making the switch to the Knights for the start of this season.

Wildcats are set to make another new signing announcement this afternoon.
