A last-minute try from Paul Sykes secured a thrilling 24-18 triumph for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at Widnes Vikings.

Chris Riley and Richard Moore had crossed in the first half to give Wildcats the initiative but the Vikings replied through Chris Hulme’s try in the corner.

Paddy Flynn crossed the whitewash to level the game at 12-12 at the break and the hosts took the lead for the first time when Hulme bagged his second early in the second period.

Harry Siejka recorded his first try for Wakefield to level matters again and set up a nail-biting finish in which both sides missed drop goal attempts.

The breakthrough came in the dying seconds when Jarrod Sammut sent Sykes racing through to score the winner.
