Wakefield Wildcats: Ben Cockayne gets England Knights call-up but Danny Kirmond misses out

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats winger Ben Cockayne has been named in the England Knights squad to face Samoa in a friendly this month.

Knights coach Kieron Purtill has named a 19-man squad for the fixture, which will be played at the Salford City Stadium on Saturday, October 19, and Cockayne has got the nod after missing out on the full England World Cup squad.

The former Normanton Knight, who is currently in talks over a possible move back to Hull KR, was selected in Steve McNamara’s Elite Training Squad earlier this season thanks to his form with Wakefield.

And although missing out on England’s final World Cup squad, Cockayne will get the chance to show McNamara what he is missing and put his name in the hat for a call-up in case of any pull-outs through injury.

“We’re all very pleased with the squad that we have selected, and it is a good opportunity for all the players, you never know who is watching,” said Purtill.

“It was definitely a tough selection. The Knights started a couple of years ago and our aim was to produce and develop a talented young squad of players for English Rugby League. Now we’re starting to step it up towards the World Cup.

“The tournament definitely serves as motivation for the players. There are still three weeks to go until Steve McNamara can change his squad, so we have told the players to prepare as if they were playing full internationals.”

There is still no international place for Wildcats skipper Danny Kirmond, however, despite his inclusion in this season’s Super League Dream Team.
