Wakefield Wildcats assistant coach James Webster believes Wildcats captain Danny Kirmond can press for an England call-up ahead of this year’s World Cup.

In-form Kirmond has produced a string of impressive displays this season and Webster believes Kirmond could push for a place in England’s 30-man squad for the World Cup in October and November.

England have the likes of Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Gareth Ellis and Gareth Hock as established second rowers but with nine Super League games remaining, Wakefield-born Kirmond is not yet out of the frame to receive a call.

Webster said: “On current form he’s definitely in with a shout and I’m pretty sure Danny is on the radar with Steve McNamara, although that is probably the position which England are strongest in at the moment.

“It’s hard to break into that but if he’s able to progress at the back end of the year, I see no reason why he can’t push his way into the squad.”
