Battling Stanley Rangers came close to turning National Conference League Division 1 on its head at the weekend as they pushed runaway leaders Wigan St Judes all the way before eventually going down 28-20.
Few expected bottom club Rangers to trouble their in-form Lancashire visitors at Lee Moor Road on Saturday but Stanley led 20-16 just before the hour mark until Saints showed just why they are leading the way with a late comeback to secure arguably their hardest-earned victory of the season so far.
Stanley, with just one win from eleven matches going into the contest, were ready to rip up the form book and a brace of tries apiece for Danny Grice, who also added two goals, and Richard Cattley saw the hosts on top midway through the second half.
But tries from Danny Thomas and Dave Myerscough eventually saw the Wigan side come from behind to secure the victory and maintain their six-point cushion at the top of the table.
Rangers will be disappointed with another defeat but will be able to take plenty of positives from their performance ahead of a huge basement battle at second-from-bottom Saddleworth Rangers on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).
