MERRIE City boxer Andy Townend won his first professional fight against Robin Deakin at the Doncaster Dome on Friday night.

The former Kettlethorpe High School pupil won 40-36 on points to make a winning start to his career as a professional.

The 22-year-old, backed by a big following from Wakefield, had been chomping at the bit to get in the ring after signing pro forms in the summer.

He knocked his opponent down in the second round with a powerful left hand hit and never looked back to claim an impressive debut victory

He was part of a seven-strong line-up of bouts put on by trainer Stefy Bull in Doncaster.
