TALENTED rugby league players from Wakefield College have made the grade by being selected to represent England Students in two games against their Scotland counterparts this summer.

Seven players from the college’s rugby league development centre have been picked for the England squad after impressing in trials at the National Carnival.

Dane Weatherill, Ryan Thurston, Jamie Crowthers, Richard Moody, Gareth Love, Ash Haynes and Charlie Daley are all set for international honours when England host Scotland on Saturday, June 25 at Whitehaven and return to play north of the border in Glasgow on Saturday, August 13.

The magnificent seven were selected for the squad by England coaches while representing Yorkshire at the National Carnival.

The White Rose county had a strong Wakefield feel about it, with half of the 22-man squad being made up of players from Wakefield College.

As well as the seven selected for the England squad; Dan Cahill, Jack Wronski, Casey Canterbury and Ryan Parker were handed places in the Yorkshire squad.

The strong presence from the Merrie City in both Yorkshire and England squads puts the icing on the cake of a superb season for the college.

Their rugby league team became Yorkshire champions in April thanks to victory over Hull and went one better in becoming National Cup winners with a thrilling victory over cup holders Hopwood Hall of Rochdale.

And coach Mick Bamford is full of praise for his team.

“This has been a magnificent season for Wakefield College and the students thoroughly deserve all the accolades that have been bestowed upon them,” he said.

“We have worked long and hard as a group with emphasis on player development and improvement of their skills and this has resulted in the winning of both the Yorkshire and National Cup, which means we can now rightly claim to be the best college side in the country.”

The college’s seven rugby league stars picked for England will be hoping to continue their success at international level when the two-game series against Scotland kicks-off on Saturday, June 25.
