Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ hopes of reaching the First Utility Super League play-offs suffered a big blow after they suffered a 36-18 loss to Huddersfield Giants.

The visitors stamped their authority on the game in the first half, opening up a 32-0 half-time lead thanks to tries from Joe Wardle, Eorl Crabtree, Shaun Lunt, Kruise Leeming and Jermaine McGillvary.

Jarrod Sammut’s self-converted try stopped the rot at the start of the second period and Paul Sykes then added another six-pointer to the hosts’ account.

Jake Connor added to the Giants’ try haul before Sammut bagged his second try and third conversion for a Trinity consolation.
