On this day in Yorkshire 1950

For nearly two hours yesterday Leeds, Wakefield and West Riding police searched for a lorry, carrying a transformer weighing 100 tons, which was “lost” between Huddersfield, Wakefield and Leeds.

Eventually, it was found parked at the roadside a few miles from Wakefield. During the day workmen had been relaying part of the main Huddersfield road near Horbury, and the lorry driver was advised not to travel over it until the surface had hardened. This morning the lorry will resume its Journey to Leeds, where the transformer is to be installed at the new power station at Skelton Grange.

Leeds Socialists have announced their intention of applying to the Ministry of Food for permission to continue the Central Civic Restaurant in the Town Hall crypt for six months from September 30.

A recommendation on these lines will probably be made at the July meeting of the Civic Catering Committee in time for confirmation by the City Council at their meeting in August.

Last year £9,185 was charged to Leeds rates for civic catering, but since April 1 last to the end of last week a profit, understood to be few hundred pounds, has been shown.
