WordFest announces Festival of the Earth events

This October, WordFest 2021 will run as a finale to the hugely successful Festival of the Earth.

WordFest is a month-long festival celebrating the spoken and written word in its widest sense – encouraging Wakefield district residents of all ages to explore their own creativity, increase their awareness of and consider their personal response to climate change.

The festival blends daily digital activities, hundreds of community library activities, a youth-led sister festival ‘LitFest’ and events held at partner venues across the district all promoting the message: ‘Make Words Count’.

Wakefield Council is excited to announce details of some of the exciting events and activities taking place as part of this year’s WordFest.

Residents and visitors to the Wakefield district will get to enjoy over 240 events as part of this year’s exciting WordFest programme, with events held in libraries and other community settings during the month-long festival.

October half-term (23-30 October) will see WX (Wakefield’s Former Market Hall) once again transformed into an exciting free pop-up visitor attraction, where residents and visitors will be able to experience an environment-themed wonderland curated by lighting and sound innovation from Backstage Academy students, with free performances and activities for all the family including a return of ‘The Whale’ which wowed audiences at Earth Rise in August.

Children and families can join StoryTrails in local libraries and WX (Market Hall) during October, for an interactive storytelling adventure, Hope Returns. Hope the boggle has enjoyed her adventures in the human world – especially in the libraries. Now it’s time to go home. There’s just one problem, litter is plugging up the magical gateway and Hope needs help to unplug it.

Hope the boggle will also have her own online podcast, where children can listen to her travels and discover her wonder of words and story-magic, and the moment Hope discovers ‘The Biggest Human Problem’.

Event booking is open now and all library events are free.

Programmes can be collected from any district libraries, and residents are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using #MakeWordsCount and #EarthFestWFD
