Princess Royal visits coal mining museum

A cheering crowd waved flags as the Princess Royal arrived at the National Coal Mining Museum, this morning.

Her Royal Highness visited the Overton museum to officially open its new underground Go Mining! Tour, before heading deep underground.

She travelled 140m down and deep into the Caphouse Colliery mine for a tour of the recently conserved Furnace Shaft, displays and underground classrooms plus the refurbished Meet a Miner attraction.

The new attractions are part of the museum’s £2.7m ‘Making Sense of Mining’ development project.

The Princess was welcomed by the Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Brian Holmes, as well the museum’s resident pit ponies - Finn, Eric and Ernie - and excited staff and visitors.

Her visit also marks the start of the Museum’s Summer of Celebration as part of its 25th anniversary
