Women’s safety to take centre stage in new Theatre Royal Wakefield production

A York theatre company will bring their hard-hitting debate on women’s safety to the Theatre Royal stage later this month.

Created by Next Door But One, a multi-award-winning LGBTQ+ and disability-led theatre company based in York, ‘She Was Walking Home’ will show at the Wakefield theatre on June 29.

Depicting stories of fear, harassment, anger, resilience and, ultimately, hope, the performance is shaped from the real-life experiences of 33 women across Yorkshire.

The powerful piece of testimonial theatre, aims to question how, in life, work and education, women can be kept safe.

Director of Next Door But One, Kate Veysey said: “We at Next Door But One are delighted to be bringing She Was Walking Home to the audience at Theatre Royal Wakefield.

“We made this show about women's safety in response to the murder of Sarah Everard in 2021 and the fear that many of the women from across our communities were experiencing.

“Since then, we have toured this bold and powerful production across Yorkshire into theatres, community centres, libraries and schools engaging thousands in this vital conversation, but unfortunately violence against women and girls is just as pressing an issue now as it was when we started making our original production.

“Our production is a call to communities for change and we are inviting more people to be a part of that, centring the voice of women at the heart of it all”.
