According to data analysed by technology company SHL, a total of 877 new businesses were created in Wakefield between January and August of this year, up from 829 last year.

Of these, the largest increases were in companies offering retail via post or online, which saw a 94 per increase from 2019.

Large increases were also recorded in the number of new companies offering their services as letting agents or beauty treatments, as well as business and domestic software development.

It is the second highest number of new businesses founded n the district in the last decade, close behind 2015, which saw 887 new businesses founded between January and August.

The business boom reached its peak in July, SHL said, shortly after the first extension of the government's furlough scheme, which was designed to support employees through lockdown

According to the information from Companies House, which holds information on all registered companies, more than 25,891 businesses have been created across Yorkshire and the Humber this year.
