The £210m project then included plans for Debenhams, Sainsbury’s, a market hall and library, as well as 72 apartments, and was scheduled for completion in 2010. It is seen here under construction in January 2010.

But in 2009, disaster struck, when developers were refused further finance for the centre, as a result of the recession. In the wake of the global financial crisis, banks had become hesitant to part with their cash, and it was big projects like Wakefield’s new flagship shopping centre which bore the brunt of the crisis.

Work on the site ground to a halt, just months before it was due to open. Though Wakefield Council agreed to pay £3.5m towards bailing out the centre, which was already partially built, concerns were raised that construction may not be able to continue.

In July 2010, pupils from St Austin's Primary School were able to quite literally leave their mark at Trinity Walk, when they were invited to sign the shopping centre's foundations.
