Could new Morrison's store in Wakefield be 24/7? 'Progress' on new supermarket for City Fields estate

It was announced last year that the supermarket giant will be moving onto land to the east of the city, where it will serve people living in 2,500 new homes.

The store will be located at the western end of the new relief road, Neil Fox Way, near Pinderfields Hospital, alongside a 24 hour gym, drive-thru coffee shop and a GP surgery.

Morrison's have now applied for an alcohol licence, which would allow them to sell booze 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Bradford-based supermarket chain has not confirmed whether this means it is planning to open the store on a 24/7 basis. Businesses often ask for a licence to cover hours longer than they need to give themselves flexibility.

But the company has also asked for permission to sell food between 11pm and 5am every day, suggesting this might be the case.

A Morrison's spokeswoman said: "We are still at an early stage with the plans for our new store but we continue to make progress.

"Part of this process is to make sure that we have all the correct permissions in place, including the alcohol licence, and we will share details on timings once it has been finalised."

Members of the public can submit comments to Wakefield Council about either of the two licence applications before a deadline of January 8.
