Jack's Supermarket has donated £27,000 to local charities and organisations including in the Wakefield area in the latest round of Jack's Supports.

Jack’s Supermarket, on Westgate Retail Park, part of the Tesco family, launched its Jack’s Supports scheme to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes.

Normally, four local charities are shortlisted and receive a £250 donation. But after such a difficult year, Jack’s has decided that no charity will miss out and is offering even more support by donating £400 to every charity that applied.

This includes 68 community groups local to its 12 stores, which is worth over £27,000 in donations.

The five groups from the Wakefield area to receive the funding were: Airedale Community Workshop, English Martyrs Primary School, Livability York House, Sense, and Wakefield District Citizens Advice Bureaux.

Alexander Kear, from Airedale Community Workshop, said: “The funding will help us to continue our woodworking workshop. This has been designed to help reduce social isolation, anxiety and other social mental health conditions.”

Angela Court-Johnston, from Sense, said: “We’re incredibly grateful for this funding. It’s thanks to support such as the Jack’s Supports scheme that Sense is able to support children and adults with complex disabilities, including those who are deafblind.”

Since launching Jack’s Supports, which was created to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes, Jack’s has received 600,000 votes and donated £184,000 to local organisations.

Michael Ward, Store Manager of Jack’s Wakefield, said: “The Jack’s Supports scheme has been running for a while now and it’s great to see how many local organisations have benefitted from our donations.

"It’s wonderful we have been able to provide support for all organisations who have applied this year as it’s important to everyone at Jack’s to be able to give back to the local community who have always been so kind to us. We strongly recommend anyone who’s considering applying to definitely get involved.”
