The last 4 Ofsted reports have all rated the school as outstanding, exam outcomes are consistently excellent, the school offers a plethora of extra-curricular activities centred around the House system, and typically over 90% of students continue in to the sixth form and of these a similar proportion progress in to high calibre undergraduate courses.

With the ongoing pandemic making an in-person open day impossible, the school have opted to set up a virtual event allowing parents to have all their questions answered and to learn more about what makes Heckmondwike Grammar School Sixth Form so impressive.

The school takes great pride in the performance of the Sixth form pupils and their achievements. Law, Medicine, Finance, Engineering, Psychology, Architecture and Fine Art are just some of the more than seventy different courses former sixth form students have opted for, while alumni can be found studying in more than 50 different institutions in the UK and across the world, from Cambridge to Princeton, Oxford to Ohio and Leeds to London.

Increasingly, students are taking up the option of higher-level apprenticeships in some of the most prestigious companies, combining their studies with time working and honing their skills in areas such as finance and computing.

The success of students is built upon the school motto of ‘Nil Sine Labore’ - Nothing Without Work. The dedication and hard work of their students is truly impressive, and is supported by a dedicated staff. Expert teachers in each subject area lead students through a smooth transition from GCSE to A Level, an excellent pastoral support system which supports students every step of the way, and an outstanding in-house careers team who help students to prepare for their next steps all work to ensure that students reach their destination of choice.

Complementing this ethos is the extensive range of extra-curricular activities, centered around the House system, which gives students an exceptionally rounded experience and provides them with an array of skills including teamwork and leadership.

Sixth form life at Heckmondwike Grammar School is about far more than academic progress, with student leadership opportunities and enrichment time set aside to help students to develop a wide range of skills.

The school received a £1.1 million grant to redevelop the old church hall ‘Annexe’ into a Sixth Form Centre. The resplendent building was formally opened in January 2019 and named the ‘Jo Cox Centre’ in memory of the former Head Girl.
