'Incredibly proud': Wakefield SEND college celebrates strong Ofsted results

Camphill Wakefield, a further education college for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, is celebrating the results of a recent Ofsted report.

The college, which offers a comprehensive provision for students aged 16 and over, achieved a ‘strong’ judgement in two of the five areas inspected and the report also highlighted that no areas fell below the 'expected standard' within the new Ofsted 5-point grading system.

This marks a significant contrast to their previous full inspection, which resulted in ‘requires improvement.’

Among the areas recognised were inclusion and provision for learners with high needs - two key priorities where the college has invested in a range of programmes and initiatives.

These include the redevelopment of learning spaces, such as a new life skills hub featuring a training kitchen, dedicated Maths and English classrooms, a digital skills suite, flexible multi-use teaching spaces, and the development of a new Enterprise Hub to strengthen employability and work-based learning opportunities.

Since the college's inadequate Ofsted inspection in 2022, Camphill Wakefield has also revised and expanded its curriculum to include additional subject areas which better support independence and employability skills.

The students have also benefited from the appointment of additional job coaches, changes to pastoral support teams and a significant increase in therapy provision.

Ian Barker, head of college, said; “I’m incredibly proud of our team and the commitment they show every day to supporting our students.

"This recognition reflects the collective effort across the college to create an environment where young people feel valued and able to achieve their potential.

“Our approach is built on collaboration, with every member of staff playing a role in each student’s journey. That shared responsibility is key to helping our students develop the confidence and independence they need for the future.”

Helen Kain, head of performance, added: “We’re pleased with the outcome, but we need to ensure this is our new starting point, as we continue to strive for excellence.

"We’ve already built the inspection feedback into our plans, and we’ll continue to strengthen our practice - particularly in SEND teaching and promoting independence - while maintaining the inclusive culture that defines us.”
