'Together for Becca': Halfpenny Lane School comes together to support teacher with terminal brain cancer

Staff and pupils at Halfpenny Lane Primary School are showing their support for Castleford teacher who has been diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

Becca Taylor, 26, a teacher at neighbouring Half Acres Primary Academy, is trying to raise money for treatment in Germany to improve her life with boyfriend Tom, her daughter Eliza, and Tom’s daughter Willow.

To show their support, Halfpenny Lane, where Tom’s mum is a teacher, has organised a Christmas hamper, worth £200, raffle to raise funds.

The school said: “Becca has had her whole world turned upside down in just a matter of weeks.

To help with the fundraising, Halfpenny Lane are raffling a Christmas hamper, packed with festive goodies – drinks, sweets, toys, and other donated gifts, including a £25 gift voucher from Michelle’s Flowers, a Swedish back massage from Hair and Holistics and, just in time for Christmas, a new Xbox console.placeholder image

"Becca has been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal brain cancer.

"After going to hospital with headaches, she was given the devastating news later that night – a 4cm brain tumour.

"Within days, Becca underwent urgent surgery at Leeds General Infirmary to remove the tumour.

"The NHS has now exhausted all options and she is now seeking further treatment abroad at her own cost.”

Tickets, at £5, can be bought from the school office and every day after school outside Year 4 doors. All money raised will go directly to Becca’s fund.

Hannah Potter, Tom’s sister, has also set up a fundraising page for vital treatments to help Becca’s condition.

Hannah said: “Becca is a loving mum, a passionate teacher, and someone who has spent her life putting others first.

"She is refusing to leave Eliza without a mum. She won’t leave Tom or Willow or any of my family at 26.

“The prognosis of this type of cancer is rubbish and the consultant said in an older person with underlying conditions she would’ve given them a prognosis of months.

"However, Becca is more likely looking at years as she is young and healthy.

“There will be clinical trials, private treatments, and therapies that should give her more time and a better quality of life.

“The costs of these treatments and the travel required are far, far, far beyond what Becca can manage alone.

“Every donation and share no matter the size, fundraising event will help Becca access care that should give her more time with her family.”

Becca said: “I can’t thank every single person enough for all the love and support you’ve thrown my way.

"For every share, comment, donation and fundraising. From people closest to me and to those that I don’t even know.

"There will never be a thank you big enough.”
