Sandal Magna Community Academy, on Belle Vue Road, was forced to close to dozens of students this morning after large amounts of rot were discovered in the school's roof.

A spokesperson for Enhance Academy Trust, which sponsors the school, said concerns had been raised by construction workers carrying our repair work on the building.

The said: "Some of the roof coverings have been taken off and the contractors have found more rot in the structure of the roof than we envisaged.

"They're having to do some additional propping on the roof.

"It's precautionary, but better safe than sorry.

"We're just evaluating how many props we need and whether we'll be able to utilise some of the space.

"We've got two year groups in an alternative site anyway because we've been planning that as part of the roofing works."

"It's so disappointing after reopening the school and having most of the students attend.

"We're just about to start a team meeting with Wakefield Council to try and see what plans we have have in place to open up early next week."

It comes just days after pupils in Wakefield returned to the classroom for the first time in almost six months.

Sandal Magna school officials will now meet with Wakefield Council to discuss the next steps.

Students in nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are affected by the closure.
