The latest figures, which cover the period up to Sunday, October 18, reveal that 5,035 people in the district have tested positive for Covid-19 since March.

This includes at least 1,985 new cases since the start of this month, and means there has now been roughly one case for every 69 residents in the district.

It comes after additional lockdown restrictions were introduced, preventing people from meeting those they do not live with in indoor settings.

But amid a rising number of cases, people have been urged to ensure they are following the new rules "at all times".

Councillor Faith Heptinstall, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Following another surge in positive cases, we must continue to follow additional local restrictions to help control the rapidly increasing infection rate in our district.

“I understand that the new restrictions placed on our lives are difficult but they are vital to protecting each other and saving lives.

“If we don’t follow the new rules, we run the real risk of further measures being imposed and even more lives could be lost to this virus.

“I urge everyone to take action now and please follow the new restrictions at all times."

The rate of cases in the district currently stands at 259 per 100,000, up from 191 per 100,000 last week.

In their latest Covid-19 dashboard, Wakefield Council also confirmed the number of new cases in each ward of the district.

Normanton and Knottingley have recorded the largest spike in cases in recent weeks, the council said, while Pontefract North and Wrenthorpe and Outwood West have recorded the largest decrease.

There have been 358 Covid-related deaths at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals since March, NHS figures show.
