According to the latest official figures, there are now 13 confirmed cases in Leeds, three in Kirklees and five in Barnsley.

The government has repeated the assertion that most people will experience only "mild" symptoms of the virus, but are advising anyone who displays symptoms to self isolate for seven days.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: "Anybody that has a new continuous cough or a high temperature should stay at home for seven days.

"This helps protect older or more vulnerable people they may come into contact with, and helps reduce the peak of the epidemic.

"People with very minor symptoms should not call 111. Most people who get COVID-19 will be able to self-manage at home, as they would with the flu. This will help to reduce the burden on the health service.

Schools and businesses remain open as usual, as the government attempts to "flatten the curve" of the epidemic's peak to avoid putting too much strain on the NHS.
