Tenth case of coronavirus confirmed in Wakefield as national total reaches 5,683

No further information about the patients is known, but it comes as national cases reach 5,683, compared to around 1,400 this time last week.

Public Health England has also confirmed that 281 patients who had tested positive for the virus have died.

The first deaths in Wakefield were confirmed by the local NHS Trust last week.

Earlier today, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said that the NHS would be contacting more than 1.5 million people to tell them that they must not leave their homes for 12 weeks.

The government has repeated calls for the public to take common sense precautions, including hand washing, social distancing and self-isolating for 7 days if any household member presents with symptoms.

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that all pubs, bars, nightclubs and leisure centres were to close for the foreseeable future, just hours after schools across the UK closed to the majority of pupils.

Attractions across Wakefield have been closed and events postponed as the district braces for the virus.
