The Wakefield district is currently subject to the strictest level of coronavirus restrictions, known as Tier 3: Very High, but has reported a sharp fall in cases following the end of the second national lockdown.

Confusion remains over whether the district will remain in Tier 3 restrictions over Christmas, after contradictory statements were given by the council and government earlier this week.

Other areas of West Yorkshire are reporting similar figures.

But unveiling the tiers last month, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the case rate was not the only factor used to decide which Tier an area would enter into.

Other factors, such as the percentage of tests returning a positive result, and case rate among the over-60s, are also factored into the decision.

Speaking in a press conference today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the results of the first review, which was due to take place today (Wednesday, December 16) would be revealed tomorrow.

It remains unclear whether West Yorkshire will remain in Tier 3 or be lowered to Tier 2, or whether different local authorities may be placed into different Tiers.

Mr Johnson said: "Thanks to the colossal collective effort in November we did bring the R below 1, we did get the infection rate down.

"But I must be frank with you we are already seeing worrying rises in some parts of the country: Kent is still seeing rising infections the number of cases in London is at 270 per 100,000 people.
