Featherstone care home shut down

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated The Coppice, on Tall Trees Drive, Featherstone, as “inadequate” in its latest inspection visit in June.

The CQC said improvements had not been made at the home after a previous inspection last November found a string of failings in the care of elderly people.

The latest report said the home was not caring and people were not treated with dignity. The Coppice failing to provide care which was safe, effective, caring, responsive or well-led.

The CQC had already rated the home as inadequate and ordered improvements.

The CQC’s Debbie Westhead said: “It is wholly unacceptable that the provider chose not to take action, following the previous inspection in November 2014.

“Failure to ensure resident’s needs are met safely and in a dignified manner is unacceptable.

“Since concerns were first identified in November 2014, we have been working closely with the local authority to ensure that residents are not at risk.

“Given the continued shortfall in standards of care, we have placed this service in special measures and made it clear where action must be taken to address the concerns identified.”

The latest report found that the home was shortstaffed, accidents were not being reported properly and medicines were not managed safely.

It said: “Interaction between the provider and the people who lived in The Coppice was not caring and people were not treated with dignity or respect.

“People’s right to privacy was not observed. People were not involved in their care.”

Owner Jackie Mitchell told the Express she had retired and closed the home, where only two residents were living, in June.
