Midwife unit at Pontefract Hospital praised in national survey

Maternity services at Pontefract Hospital have been praised in a national study.

A survey by the independent Picker Institute found the hospital’s midwife-led birth unit was among the best in the country for whether women said their partner had been involved in their care during labour.

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust said the unit was also praised for women being treated with dignity and respect, cleanliness and helping mums feed their babies.

Results from the Picker Institute are used for the Care Quality Commission’s annual Maternity Survey of 133 NHS organisations.

Gill Pownall, head of midwifery and nursing at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am delighted the team has been recognised nationally for the support it gives women to have a normal, active labour and birth with minimum intervention.”
