That was the question being answered across the Wakefield district at the weekend as Heritage Open Days gave people the chance to see some familiar landmarks in a completely different light.
Visitors could step inside St Peter's Church in Kirkthorpe, explore the ruins of Sandal Castle with a tour guide and go behind the scenes at Theatre Royal Wakefield.
At Sandal Castle, visitors were able to join guided tours around the castle grounds and ruins, hearing about its 500 years of history from volunteers.
Meanwhile, Theatre Royal opened its doors on Sunday, giving visitors the opportunity to discover parts of the historic building they would not normally see.
Visitors could explore archive material and an installation in the Walker Studio, as well as seeing the theatre's magnificent old auditorium from different angles and getting a glimpse backstage.
The Theatre Royal said its Heritage Open Day was "in full swing” as the event got under way, with visitors invited to explore the building and its history.
At St Peter's Church in Kirkthorpe, visitors could explore both inside and outside the historic church, discovering another part of the district's heritage away from the better-known landmarks.
Heritage Open Days continues across the district until Sunday, September 20.
