The cathedral, like many organisations, has been forced to cancel many of their usual events and services this year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But they have now announced their new festive programme, which will include lighting the building in red and green and an online advent calendar for worshippers.

The Canon Precentor, the Revd Canon Leah Vasey Saunders said: “This year has brought challenges in which we have all been forced to live very differently.

“Many of our lives have been changed forever by the loss of a loved one, and there is a lot to grieve about.

“We will all be celebrating Christmas differently this year, and for many of us it will be a far more humble Christmas. But a humble Christmas is so much more at the heart of that very first Christmas.

“So this year as we remember the baby born in the manger, let us draw closer to the true spirit of Christmas as we reflect on this challenging year. The Christmas story reminds us that God chooses to be with us."

The first event of the season is an alternative service of lessons and carols, which will be hosted at the Cathedral on Friday, December 11.

It will be followed by carol services, a pre-recorded online nativity, pop-up carol singing events across the city and a digital crib service on Zoom.

The building will also be flooded with red and green light from December 19 until the New Year.

A number of services will be held in person at the Cathedral, but these will need to be booked online in advance and a maximum of four tickets per household will be available.
