Kirklees Light Railway announces reopening date - and confirms new social distancing rules

The popular attraction was among thousands forced to close in March as part of sweeping restrictions to slow the spread of coronavirus.

The Railway, best known for its seven mile return journey on a fleet of steam engines and outdoor adventure playgrounds, was just five weeks into its season when lockdown began.

But there is now a light at the end of the tunnel, as owners confirm that it will reopen from Saturday, July 11.

A spokesperson for the Railway said: "Staff are being brought back from furlough leave and volunteer activity has resumed as the reopening preparations get into full swing. During this time, local residents are reminded that it is both illegal and dangerous to access or walk on the railway line which stretches from Clayton West to Shelley.

"Preparation trains will be running daily and at unscheduled times. As a COVID-secure visitor attraction, the railway has implemented many news measures including reduced capacities, social distancing, hand sanitiser stations and one-way systems.

"Cleaning regimes have been ramped up and adult visitors are asked to wear face masks/coverings when journeying on the trains or when within 1-2m of people from outside their ‘social bubbles.'
