The displays aim to brighten up the town coming out of lockdown in hopes for a better future, with Pontefract in Bloom providing 27 planters, more than 50 hanging baskets and bedding in the town centre, Valley Gardens, Pontefract Park and St Giles’ Church.

Funding is essential for the group post pandemic, as sponsorship income reduced by half due to many supporting businesses ceasing trading.

Colin White, chair of Pontefract in Bloom said “We believe that a profusion of colour in our streets encourages pride in our town and supports the business economy.

“In previous years we have managed the cost of delivering Pontefract in Bloom by working with other community groups and recruiting volunteer help.

“We are now launching Pontefract in Bloom for summer 2021 to help us out of lockdown.

“Although we benefit from grant funding from Wakefield Council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Fund and Wakefield District Housing, this only covers a fraction of the cost of delivering the abundance of floral displays that Pontefract deserves.

“Businesses are scheduled to reopen this month and hopefully our sponsorship income will pick up, although of course, many businesses may not be able to support us due to financial pressures resulting from lockdown.

“Covid rules are being relaxed this month and we will be able to arrange volunteer sessions for our planting in early June.

“Our message to potential sponsors is that a town made attractive with flowers is good for business footfall, as well as boosting morale and pride in Pontefract.

Despite setbacks, including vandal attacks on displays, Pontefract in Bloom was delivered successfully last summer.
