Armistice Day services across the district

Millions fell silent this morning as the nation commemorates the end of the First World War.

Tears were shed and prayers were given after a solemn two minutes’ silence was held today (Tuesday) to remember British servicemen who died since the war began 100 years ago - at locations across the district - on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

People gathered at the steps of Wakefield Cathedral, Westmorland Street, and hushed to a silence in remembrance at 11am.

And people in Pontefract met at the War Memorial in Pontefract town centre from 10.45am to observe the two minutes’ silence.

There was a two minutes’ silence at the Featherstone War Memorial, Station Lane.

In Knottingley, people assembled at the cenotaph, on Chapel Lane and in Castleford at the memorial site on Powell Street at 11am.

There was a wreath-laying ceremony at 10.50am before a two minutes’ silence at 11am at the Ackworth War Memorial.

And silences were observed at 11am at the Hemsworth War Memorial, Bullenshaw Road and the South Elmsall and Moorthorpe War Memorial.
