Budding athletes did district proud

Schoolchildren from across the district were among 800 young people who competed in the West Yorkshire School Games winter festival.

Ackworth Howard School won the only medal for the district, on an action-packed day at the Headingley Campus of Leeds Beckett University. Medals were awarded in boccia, disability sportshall athletics, hockey, netball and orienteering.

Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds schools won five medals apiece; and Kirklees schools claimed four medals. Teams from St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School in Featherstone and children from Sharlston were also involved.

The festival was opened by Paralympic legend Hannah Cockroft MBE. She addressed the athletes at the opening ceremony and was also on hand to present some of the winners with their medals.

Hannah said: “Congratulations to all the young people who did themselves, their schools and their districts proud.
