One lane is closed on the southbound carriageway between junction 47 at Parlington and junction 46 at Austhorpe.
Traffic is queuing from junction 48 with the A1 (M) at Hook Moor.
A police spokesman said no-one was injured in the incident.
Bus fire causes delays on M1
Motorists face delays on the M1 this afternoon (Wednesday) due to a bus fire.
