Club member Malcolm Dobson said: “1891 was the genesis of Wakefield Camera Club. In 2016 we will have been operational for 125 years. So it’s got to be good and getting better every day.”

The celebrations include a week-long photographic exhibition, also in May.

It will be staged in the Old Restaurant in the recently refurbished Wakefield Town Hall on Wood Street. The exhibition will run from Saturday, May 7 until May 14. It will be open to view from 10am until 4pm each day.

Up to 200 mounted prints and an equal amount of digital images will be on display for keen photographers and members of the public.

Mr Dobson, the club’s exhibitions and marketing co-ordinator, added: “This will give the public yet another opportunity to see the outstanding and exclusive work from our members.

“Many of our club members have pursued and won awards in the UK and abroad and are thus well qualified to offer guidance to the less experienced among us.

“On both these occasions members of Wakefield Camera Club will be on hand to discuss any points visitors might wish to have clarified. So this could be a great opportunity for you to meet our team and develop your photo skills further, whether to achieve your goals at college or university – or just enjoy what you do.”

He added: “There are also many opportunities to test your skills in competitions, critiques, studio work - even at international level.

“We have organised a biannual competition versus a team of excellent photographers from Noosa Camera Club in Queensland, Australia.

“We have been successful in sneaking a couple of wins by a small margin, such is the quality of our members work.

“So if you have an eye for a good photograph or just like to see good pictures then these are two exhibitions that are not to be missed.”

Wakefield Camera Club next meets on Monday, January 4 from 7.30pm at New Brookhouse Club, on Barnsley Road, Sandal, where it stages its weekly meetings.
