Celebrating 90 years of Castleford rugby club

And to celebrate their acceptance to the Northern League in 1926, a special blue plaque has been dedicated to Castleford Tigers by the town’s civic trust.

The tribute marks nearly a century since the first boarding meeting held by Castleford Rugby League Football Club, which later became the Tigers.

Tony Wallis, vice chairman of the trust, said: “As a civic trust, we are about promoting pride in Castleford and one of the main things we are proud of here is Rugby League.

“Castleford Tigers have a lot of support in the town and they also raise the profile of Castleford.

“That’s why we decided to mark this 90th anniversary, to recognise how important they are to our town.”

The blue plaque was presented by civic trust president Lord St Oswald.

It was unveiled on Monday at Reflections House on Station Road, Castleford, which was known as the Great Northern Hotel in 1926.

That venue was where the club’s first board meeting was held 90 years ago.

The plaque was funded by a grant from Wakefield Council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Fund, after an application by the civic trust.

Tigers boss Steve Gill praised to the civic trust for its support.

He said: “It is a proud day to be able to celebrate our 90th birthday with a Blue Plaque award.

“The history of our club is very sacred, and the work the heritage group has done in their short tenure has been fantastic and something that all supporters of the Castleford Tigers are proud of.”

Civic trust vice chairman Mr Wallis, and chairwoman Sandra Wright, also attended the plaque unveiling event last week.
